BEAUTY MANUFACTURING: CONTRACT MANUFACTURING

INTRO TO: CONTRACT MANUFACTURING

Contract manufacturing is typically the step after custom formulating and testing is completed. When you custom formulate at Genie Supply, you walk away with the formula. When you contract manufacture, you have to walk up to us with the formula, so that we can make it. (So if you’ve landed on this page, but your formulation isn’t finished yet, head back to the custom formulating page (click here) to learn more about your first step. Don’t forget that when our CF clients lock into long-term manufacturing with us, they’ll receive up to 200% of their formulating and testing fees back as credits against their contract manufacturing orders!

Contract manufacturing can also be for those who have been creating their beauty products at home, and are looking to scale with/into a lab. A recipe you’ve made in your kitchen won’t match up with a lab formula due to factors like different ways of measuring, but there are ways we can work together to get your formulation lab-ready.

Finally, you may be ready for contract manufacturing if you’ve made and tested your formulation in another lab. Welcome to Genie Supply!

The on-boarding form asks for specific information on how you make the formula at home including mixing instructions, ingredients (common names, trade names and full INCI listing), percentages of those ingredients (BY WEIGHT!), and other important details.

Why are details important? A product like an oil may be simple (i.e. simply mix the oils). However, a cream can be super complicated from its components such as different phases, temperatures, and mixing equipment.

Please make sure your instructions are as detailed as possible when it comes to phases, temperature, and mixing.

If you need an NDA first, email customerservice@geniesupply.com to have one sent.

We have no MOQ for manufacturing, but a small order fee will be assessed on a sliding scale (the more pieces you order, the lower the fee) until the 2000 pcs point. (see more info in our pricing catalog pages 1-12)

THE STEPS OF CONTRACT MANUFACTURING:

1.WE'LL FOLLOW YOUR DIRECTIONS TO RECREATE YOUR EXACT FORMULA

First, send us your formula (let us know if you need an NDA first!). We’ll take a look and offer a quote, including all steps, the first of which is sample recreation. If you don’t have testing documents (e.g. stability, PET) these tests will need to be performed here or in another lab first before we can take on your manufacturing. This is for everyone’s safety.

2. WE SEND YOU A SAMPLE FOR CONFIRMATION

We’ll send a sample, following the exact instructions in your formulation document. If a substitute needs to be made, we’ll ask first. Then, we ship you the sample for your confirmation. If all is well, we proceed onward with manufacturing. If not, additional sample rounds may be needed. Check with your statement of work (SOW) to see if these rounds are included or need to be billed (lab time, billed by the hour).

3. TIME TO MANUFACTURE!

Remember: Contract Manufacturing and “Tech Transfers” should be simple! You send the formula and testing docs, we follow along and send a sample, you approve and we batch. If it’s not simple, information was lost somewhere along the way.

Should you need more information or if this is your first time transferring your tech, please visit the “home to lab” (click here) page to see the steps you should take to prepare for a smooth transfer.

PRICING?

Sampling costs depend on the hours of lab time needed, and if any special ingredients must be ordered, but typically you can expect costs of $300-600 per round. Manufacturing is harder to say, but if you find a similar product / packaging / size in our pricing catalog, that could give you a great idea! We follow the same 2k+ pc across the board (small order fees apply to orders under 2k pcs). As always, share your parameters / constraints + we’ll find a solution together!
