6 Steps to Private Label Manufacturing

Starting a business is hard and starting a cosmetics can be complex, especially if you know nothing about chemicals and formulas. If you’re looking to get a ‘quick’ start, might I suggest private labeling manufacturing?

The best part about private label manufacturing is you don’t have to worry about creating a formula. If you’re interested in lipsticks with a metallic touch, chances are that formula already exists and in several different colors.

Similar to our “Custom Formulate in 4 Steps or Less” article about the custom formulation process, this article will take you down the timeline of private label manufacturing in six steps.

Earlier, I said ‘quick’ because this process is easy and simple, but does require some time. Not as long as custom formulating, but enough that you need to stay patient. Don’t be discouraged, this process typically takes as fast as 2 months or as long as 6.

Genie Supply’s Private Label Manufacturing in 6 Steps

  1. Sampling + Ordering (1-4 weeks)

This step is the preliminary step and technically step 0 because it requires more work from you. If you’re interested in working with us, start by browsing through our catalogs of color cosmetics and skincare products. We also offer both CBD and non-CBD products.

Next, order and try out some samples. Simply look at the samples and swatches on the site, add to cart, and order! While our pictures on our site are beautiful, it’s not the same experience as when you’re holding the product in your hands and inspecting it yourself. As you reorder samples and colors, you should also figure out what packaging you want.

Once you feel you are ready to move on to the next step, you must request an order invoice for your order.

2. Onboarding (1-4 weeks)

Yay, we’re thrilled to be working with you! Now we need to get things set up on a paperwork and official kind of level. Paperwork needs to be signed and designs need to be approved. Payment is also figured out during this step. You can option to pay a deposit or pay the price in full.

3. Manufacturing (2-6 weeks)

We make everything AS IT’S ORDERED to ensure your product has the maximum freshness and the longest shelf life. Remember when I mentioned collaboration? This step can take longer than the previous steps. Between creating your product and neatly packaging it up, there are other factors to consider.

Depending on the products you’re looking for, the complexity of the project can take up time or we may be waiting on specific ingredients from third-party vendors. Lastly, the packaging, printing and shipping timelines can slow things down.

4. Testing (1-4 weeks)

Unlike custom formulation where a new formulation requires specific testing, these formulas are already FDA approved. Depending on the order, we may do CBD testing and other tests like heavy metal to further ensure the quality of the product.

We perform USP 61 and 62 testing post-manufacturing that guarantees the cleanliness and compliance of the product. The length of time can vary due to the tests and adjustments.

5. Filling + Assembly (1-4 weeks)

Generally, we book our projects onto our assembly line as fast as possible. The current queue and other determining factors could slow your project from the time it enters and exits our assembly line.

6. Payment + Shipping (1-2 weeks)

Last step! Once the goods are finished on the assembly line, we will issue an invoice for the final payment and/or shipping. Once paid, we will ship the next business day. Shipping can take up to 1 week for domestic orders and up to 2 for international orders.
