STEP 1
Ask Yourself: What Do You Want For Your Beauty Brand?
Before you make any business decisions, you need to determine… well, your business. These are some starter questions to help guide your initial thinking:
Are you interested in a brand focused on skincare, color cosmetics, both or a hybrid?
Is clean beauty or natural beauty a priority
for you?(It’s all that we do here at Genie Supply)
Do you want to spend more time on: the business model or the product(s)?
What’s your current level of experience, team size and budget?
STEP 2
Based on your budget and vision for your brand, you will choose the route of that is best for you. There are 4 main routes you can take to start your beauty brand, and the route you choose will depend mostly on your budget and experience level.

STEP 3
Craft Your Beauty Brand’s Game Plan
Now it’s time to find a lab and figure out a best manufacturing route for your brand. Browse through labs’ sites to see if their capabilities match your needs. Don’t forget to call them, to see how they handle prospective customers. After all, this is going to be a long-term working relationship. Mutual respect is the goal! Ask your (potential) lab(s):
Do they offer turnkey services? Just batching? What about formulating? What do they offer in the way of packaging?
Do they offer additional services beyond manufacturing, like brand design, marketing, etc.?
If it’s important to you: Do you vibe with them and their beliefs? Are they woman-owned, BIPOC owned, clean, sustainable, or (minimum) friendly?
Are they focused more on color cosmetics, skincare, or both?
How does their timeline compare to yours? How do their prices and MOQ compare to your budget?
STEP 4
Once you’ve found your perfect lab match, it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty. Planning is key! Make sure to work out all the details with your partner lab. Try to list out any assumptions you may still be making that need to be challenged. Ask questions. Get it all out out in the open. Order samples, test, ask (more!) questions, then work out the final details, including:
Hone in on the Details
What are the details of your order? Quantity, packaging, size, etc?
What’s the final price per unit?
When can you expect your finished order? What’s a reasonable timeline?
“What else should I be asking that I haven’t yet asked?”
STEP 5
It’s time to decide where you will sell and market your product. Today, there are endless marketplaces online and in person to sell beauty products such as:
