No Such Thing as Perfect

Okay, if I’m being honest, there’s no such thing as “perfect” cosmetics labs in Texas. Not there and not in anywhere of the whole world. I know the title says “Perfect Cosmetics Lab in Texas (and Other Places),” but it’s only telling a half-truth. In reality, each lab has its pros and cons.

Instead, this article is aimed at helping you find the best cosmetics lab in Texas (and other places) that’s right for you. Each entrepreneur has a unique situation regarding their budget, size of the team, amount of experience, etc.

Not every lab will be equipped to give you what you need because they also have their own unique situation regarding their niche, size, etc.

Below is a list of things for you to check off on your journey to finding the perfect cosmetics lab for you, from most to least important. Then, there is a sample review guide of some cosmetics laboratories in Texas and beyond according to our checklist. After that, there will be more information on Genie Supply and if we’re a good fit for you!

The Checklist to Finding Your Perfect Cosmetics Lab in Texas (and Other Places)

When looking for cosmetics labs in Texas (and other places), your priority is finalizing the size of your team and their expertise, your budget, your level of experience, and what types of products you want to produce. Then, you should determine the wants and needs of your brand. After that, you can start the search for your perfect cosmetics lab!

  1. Capabilities

As mentioned before, each cosmetics lab has different services to offer.  The two most important things to look for are manufacturing capabilities and the products they offer.

Usually, labs offer either color cosmetics or skincare, because each area requires its own domain expertise and unique machinery for the formulations involved.

So, depending on what you need for your line, you will need to ask:

  • Does the cosmetics lab specialize in skincare or makeup?

  • What kind of mediums do their products come in (i.e., solid, liquid, gel, cream, powders)?

  • What is the depth of experience of their team?

  • Are they better apt to high order or low order quantities?

  • Do they offer design services?

2. Personal Fit

After you look at capabilities, you need to be honest with yourself - do you like this cosmetics lab? This factor isn’t superficial because you should feel good when choosing your lab. Although many cosmetics labs offer logistical and manufacturing services, you will actually be interfacing with their sales and customer service team on a daily basis, not the lab techs or chemists.

So, do you like who you’re working with? In one way or another, the lab you pick will represent you and your brand, which makes this point even more crucial. Ask:

  • Does the cosmetics lab work with brands of your size?

  • Do you like their business practices?

  • What do you need, and how do they match that up with you?

  • Do they give you the proper attention you need? (consider your level of experience)

  • Is it a good overall “fit”?

3. Cost

Business is business, and money does play a factor in choosing your cosmetics lab. Say you find a lab that you really like, but maybe you don’t have enough in your budget. No need to despair, you can always go back to them after your brand (and budget) grows. Or, maybe you’ll find a lab that you hadn’t considered before.

Review your budget when thinking about the cost. Find out:

  • What is the price range of the cosmetics lab?

  • How do they arrange shipping?

  • What is the minimum/maximum order quantity on the products that you want?

  • What is the cosmetics lab’s turnaround time?

  • How much do samples cost?

4. Location

It might surprise you, but the location is NOT the most crucial factor in determining the perfect cosmetics lab for you. That’s why our title references cosmetics labs in Texas (and other places). You probably had this idea that you’ll work side by side with the creators at a local lab and get a hands-on approach for your brand.

While it’s a sweet image, the reality of that happening is very slim. Most cosmetics labs in Texas (and just about anywhere) do not allow customers to come to the factory/lab for several reasons. Visitors could be disruptive to the lab’s daily practices, or it could force the lab to accidentally disclose who they work with, violating precious NDAs that are in place.

That’s a huge risk for these cosmetics labs that they probably aren’t willing to take. Think about:

  • What is the cosmetics lab’s visitor policy?

  • Are you visiting the factories or the sales office?

  • If you do visit, what will be the main point of your visit? To see the facilities, meet the team you work with, or something else?
